1903<G$1> Louisiana Purchase/Jefferson PR65 Cameo NGC. Mint records indicate that only 100 proofs of this, the "first" commemorative gold coin, were issued. (Actually, many numismatists, consider the 1848 CAL. quarter eagles to be the first commemorative gold coin, but those coins entailed no real design change or new design.) Today only a few dozen certified specimens remain. This example offers apricot-gold surfaces with well-frosted devices. Light contact marks on the cheek are visible only with a loupe, along with a bit of chatter in the reverse field, nonetheless confirming both the Gem grade and overall desirability. Population: 4 in 65, 6 finer (9/06).
