1903 G$1 Louisiana Purchase/Jefferson PR64 Cameo
1903 G$1 Louisiana Purchase/Jefferson PR64 Cameo PCGS. Although it perhaps goes largely forgotten today, the Louisiana Purchase was undoubtedly the most significant single real estate transaction in American history, doubling the size of the American continent by adding essentially all the land between the Mississippi River and the Rocky Mountains. It is only fitting that such a monumental event would be commemorated numismatically--so far--in two different centuries! In 1903 through 1905 it was the Louisiana Purchase-Jefferson/McKinley and Lewis and Clark Exposition gold dollars, and in 2004-2006 it was the various numismatic delicacies including the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial silver dollar, the Westward Journey nickels depicting Jefferson, and others.
While many numismatists consider the 1848 CAL. quarter eagles to be America's first true commemorative coin, those pieces entailed no complete overhaul or design change. The 1903 gold dollars were specifically designed as true commemoratives, and the Mint recorded only 100 proofs each struck of the Jefferson and McKinley designs. Survival rates appear virtually identical for the two designs in proof format. In PR64 Cameo this is the only piece so certified at PCGS, superseded by a single PR65 Cameo (2/08).
When viewing this piece there is no doubt about its status as a proof. The fields are deeply reflective, and the devices show a noticeable amount of mint frost that provides the Cameo designation. Rich orange-gold color is seen over each side of this lovely, high-grade proof.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
