1903<G$1> Louisiana Purchase/Jefferson MS67 PCGS. Ex: Swiss America/Dr. Merritt. The early years of the U.S. commemorative series witnessed a mix of denominations. First came the 1892 and 1893 Columbian half dollars, then the 1893 Isabella quarter, and the 1900 Lafayette Dollar. The next commemorative program was for the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition, held in St. Louis. (The 1904 Olympics were also held in St. Louis.) Gold dollars had not been coined since 1889, and the denomination was abolished by Act of Sept. 25, 1890. Also, the small diameter of a gold dollar was inappropriate for an elaborate commemorative design. Nonetheless, on June 28, 1902, Congress passed an act specifying $250,000 in gold dollars for the exposition. This mintage was divided between Jefferson and McKinley obverses, but most pieces were eventually melted as unsold, leaving a net production of 17,500 pieces for each of the two types. The current offering consists of a splendidly frosty, richly toned Superb Gem with bright golden-orange color modified slightly by pleasing olive accents. A mint-made die line extends from just above the L in Louisiana through the letters ST. LOU on the lower reverse, and a single faint luster break, due northeast of the E in ONE, may serve in the future as a pedigree marker. A beautiful coin which will certainly draw the attention of advanced collectors.
