1903 5C PR68 Cameo NGC. Beginning in 1902, and continuing through the end of the series in 1912, the Philadelphia Mint struck proof Liberty Nickel with semi-brilliant, if not completely brilliant devices. This finish, which was born out of a change in production methods at the Mint, is that which is typically seen on survivors of the 1,790-piece 1903 delivery. A few examples, however, have received a Cameo designation from either NGC or PCGS, and the present Superb Gem is tied with another PR68 Cameo NGC specimen for finest certified honors (10/02). A light overlay of mint frost highlights the fully brought up devices. The fields are deeply mirrored with reflectivity that shines powerfully at all angles despite some light, mottled, powder-blue and golden-tan iridescence that is most readily evident over the upper reverse. Blemish-free, or essentially so, with undeniable condition rarity. From the Trane Collection. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
