<B>1903 $5 PR66 NGC.</B></I> In 1902 the Mint switched from the former proof format that featured brilliantly mirrored fields and deeply frosted cameo devices to an all-brilliant format. The 1903 half eagle accordingly is not found with the deep cameo contrast of the issues from 1901 and before. The 1903 is one of the most common Liberty Head proof half eagles, but any proof issue as a type is still quite rare. The surfaces on each side are a gorgeous canary-yellow, brilliantly mirrored, as expected, and uncommonly free of distractions, even for a well-preserved proof. Bold and beautiful!
