1903 $2 1/2 PR65 NGC. Mint officials made a decision in 1902 to alter their proof production methods and do away with the desirable cameo contrast of earlier years. The proof 1903 Liberty Quarter Eagle is the most uniformly brilliant issue produced during this era. Even so, the present Gem displays appreciable mint frost over the reverse eagle. The obverse is reflective throughout, and both sides are smooth with lovely yellow-gold coloration. A razor sharp strike rounds out this coin's list of positive attributes. Just 197 specimen strikes were produced this year, but the 1903 is still among the more common dates in the later proof Liberty Quarter Eagle series. The number of certified survivors, however, dwindles rapidly above the PR64 grade level, with a mere six pieces finer than PR65 at NGC (7/02). We last offered a similarly graded representative of this early 20th century proof as lot 9030 in our July 2002 New York Signature Sale. That coin was certified by PCGS.
