1902 S$1 PR66 NGC. Slight cameo contras
1902$1> PR66 NGC. Slight cameo contrast is noted on this example, although few Proof coins from 1902 or 1903 exist with evidence of such contrast. During these years, and continuing until 1907, the devices were polished in the dies as well as the fields. This polishing reduced the contrast seen on earlier dates. The exact reason that this occurred is not known. Perhaps the Mint was experimenting with new procedures to make these dies, or perhaps they had the capability all along but decided at the beginning of operations at the third Mint to change their production methods. In The Official Red Book of Morgan Silver Dollars, Dave Bowers explained: "some employee, perhaps new on the job, decided this year to polish the portraits on the various Proof dies." We have yet to see any documentation that states just what took place regarding proofs during this period of time. This brilliant proof is a typical example with weak central obverse and reverse details, especially over the ear on the obverse and on the eagle's breast and legs on the reverse. Very slight champagne toning is evident on both sides.
