1902 Palace of the Fans Cincinnati Silver Pass
1902 Opening of Palace of the Fans Cincinnati Silver Season Pass. A clear contender for the title of “Best in Class” in the category of silver season passes is this simply remarkable artifact from the collection of Gus Axelson, a prominent sportwriter from the Chicago Herald and author of the 1919 Charles Comiskey biography U Commie. /U Though this gorgeous example of Victorian era craftsmanship afforded Axelson free entry to a season's worth of Reds home games, the more specific purpose of this scarce keepsake was as an invitation to the May 16th dedication of the brand new Palace of the Fans, which served as the club's home field between 1902 and 1912 when Crosley Field was christened on the same ground. One can't help but be stunned by the outrageous detail of the park's ornate grandstand that is faithfully reproduced here in silver, complete with waving flags and miniature ballplayers scattered before a teaming crowd of spectators. Axelson's name is likewise rendered with the matchless artistry, and an engraved serial number of “85” appears at upper right. The gorgeously struck sterling silver keepsake measures 2.5x3.75” and remains in fine, undamaged condition. Included in the lot are six card stock season passes issued to Axelson, as follows: 1919 Cubs, 1922 White Sox, 1923 Cubs, 1924 BBWAA, 1925 BBWAA, 1927 Cubs. Finally, we have Axelson's Chicago Herald business card. All are in VG-EX condition or better.

Shipping: Miscellaneous Collectibles, Smal (view shipping information)
