1902-O<50C> MS63 NGC. Ex: Richmond Collection. David Lawrence, in his The Complete Guide to Barber Halves, writes that the 1902-O half dollar, despite its relatively high mintage of over 2.5 million coins, is scarce in Fine and above condition. Indeed, fewer than 75 Mint State pieces have been certified by NGC and PCGS combined. Moreover, this issue tends to have poor luster and displays a weak strike. The present MS63 example exhibits sparkling luster and traces of peripheral russet toning, which is somewhat deeper on the reverse. The reverse portrays the typical weakness that plagues the issue, especially on the eagle's neck and the adjacent shield. The obverse is somewhat better brought up, though the I of LIBERTY, the lower wreath leaves, and some of the star centers are soft. Several minute marks are scattered over Liberty's face, but these are not all that distracting. Overall, a decent specimen of this tough, and usually poorly-made New Orleans issue.
