<B>1902 $5 MS65 PCGS.</B></I> The 1902 half eagle, with a business-strike mintage of 172,400 pieces, is by no means a rare coin, but is far more elusive than the most common dates of the type (Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth, 2006). This is especially true at the Gem level of preservation, where fewer than 30 examples have been seen by PCGS and NGC, and just 10 or so finer. Glowing luster radiates from gorgeous peach-gold surfaces, and the design elements have benefited from a powerful strike. A few minor contact marks and luster grazes preclude an even higher grade.
