1902 $20 PR50 PCGS. As a business strike, the 1902 is a better date, since only 31,140 pieces were struck. Proofs are vastly rarer, as just 114 examples were struck, and per Breen, "possibly 40 to 45 proofs survive." Coin dealers such as B. Max Mehl often deposited proof gold coins at face value prior to the 1933 gold recall, as it was at the time too difficult to sell proofs at a profitable premium. This moderately abraded yellow-gold specimen retains more than half of its initial reflectivity. Certified in a green label holder. Population: 2 in 50, 28 finer (6/07).

Coin Engraver: James B.
