1902 $2 1/2 PR65 NGC. This is a lovely Gem proof quarter eagle. A powerful strike translates into bold definition on the design elements. Bright peach-gold surfaces yield hints of milky patina under magnification, and are devoid of any bothersome contact marks. The issue comes with a mintage of 193 pieces, most of which have apparently survived to the present, as evident from the population date; NGC and PCGS have seen about 165 coins, the vast majority falling into the PR62 to PR64 range. Interestingly, most quarter eagle proofs seen between 1902 and 1907, according to Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth (2006) do not have cameo devices. Census: 9 in 65, 10 finer (6/07).

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
