1902 $2 1/2 PR65 Cameo PCGS. The Philadelphia Mint's output of proof Quarter Eagles amounted to just 193 coins in 1902. This is the first year in which the Mint altered its proof production methods to eliminate the cameo contrast seen on earlier examples, a practice that would continue through 1907. It is difficult for us to overstate the rarity and importance of this Gem quality survivor. The cameo contrast is significant for the date, and, indeed, we have not handled another proof 1902 Quarter Eagle with this designation. The color is an original yellow-gold shade that yields to coal-black in the fields as the coin turns away from the light. More than smooth enough to justify the PR65 designation, the surfaces display a tiny tick in the obverse field before the point of Liberty's bust that we note solely for pedigree purposes. Only 65 proof 1902 Quarter Eagles are believed extant.Ex: New York 2002 Bullet Auction (Heritage, 7/02), lot 1492. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
