1901-S S$1 MS66 PCGS. The 1901-S does not appear to be a date that was well represented in the great Treasury Department releases of the 1962-1964 era. However, this date is not rare in Mint State, at least not in lower grades through the MS64 level. Apparently, many '01-S Dollars emerged from vaults at the San Francisco Mint from the 1920s through the 1950s. The majority of these coins, although Mint State, were not well preserved, and they probably reside at the MS60, MS61, MS62, or MS63 levels today. It should come as little surprise, therefore, that the 1901-S remains a significant condition rarity as a Gem. We have not offered an MS66 PCGS coin since Mike Casper's example appeared as lot 6208 in our November 2001 Santa Clara Signature Sale. Whereas that coin was brilliant, the present Gem is beautifully toned in warm orange-copper iridescence that yields to isolated areas of silver-gray color here and there. The strike is razor sharp, and the luster is bountiful with a swirling, frosty sheen. There are no singularly mentionable bagmarks, and a tiny spot in the left obverse field is noted for pedigree purposes. Population: 17 in 66, with a mere two finer (7/02).From the Hans Poetsch Collection. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
