1901-S 50C MS67 PCGS. An incredible specimen of this c 1901-S 50C MS67 PCGS. An incredible specimen of this coveted date, the surfaces blaze with luster and the strike is sharp on all but a few of the usual areas, near the top right of the shield and wing, and on the right claw of the eagle. The obverse stars are all sharp. Delicate gold toning is found primarily in the fields near the periphery, and the coin is quite attractive. Excellent quality and surfaces, with tiny reeding marks noted between Liberty's lower cap and the fourth star, one small nick just above the fold in Liberty's cap, and another in the field between her chin and the twelfth star. These faint nicks are described in detail to identify this coin in the future, not because they are distracting. We can also conclude that this is not the Eliasberg nor the Price coin after plate matching. This coin certainly carries its own credentials, and is clearly in the top half dozen known of the date. In fact, NGC and PCGS have graded a combined three specimens this high, with none seen in higher grade by either service. The 1901-S is a very rare date in the Barber dime and Barber quarter series, and despite a mintage of 847,044 pieces for the half dollar, the 1901-S is considered (by David Lawrence) to be third in mint state rarity in the series, trailing only the 1904-S and the 1896-O. It is expectantly rare as a Gem, and in Superb Gem condition as seen here, there are but three specimens to choose from, and as such a collector may have to wait a decade or more before another half dollar of this date of equal quality crosses the auction block.
The die diagnostics for this specimen are the obverse die is an early die state with no cracks or clashing seen, and the die is unfinished in the area at the lower portions of TR in TRUST through the olive leaves in Liberty's crown. On the reverse we note no clashing or die cracks, but there is a similar unfinished area in the die near the branch between the olive leaves. A coin for the connoisseur, and destined for one of the finest collections every formed. Without a doubt, this is an opportunity that will not soon repeat itself.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid. This lot is being auctioned in conjunction with a live floor auction by Heritage Galleries & Auctioneers. All final auction and invoice information will be supplied by Heritage Galleries & Auctioneers, and all other information should be considered preliminary. Lot:4228
