1901/0-S $5 Half Eagle--Uncentered Broadstrike--MS64 Prooflike NGC. The scarcity of gold errors is well known to anyone who has a passing acquaintance with error coinage. The reason is perhaps not as well known. Until 1910, the mint employed "lady adjustors" who weighed every blank and every gold coin. Which means if a gold planchet was underweight it was sent back to be melted and recast into another planchet. If it was overweight, the planchet was filed until it was within the weight tolerance for that denomination. Since theoretically each gold planchet and each gold coin was inspected, it is no wonder so few gold errors exist.
This particular coin is a double error. The date shows a pronounced underdigit beneath the final 1 in the date. These overdates are rare in all grades, and especially so in mint condition. This piece was produced as an uncentered broadstrike--that is, struck with no collar and off center. In this case, there is significant (perhaps 10%) blank flan at the bottom of the obverse and top of the reverse. The fields are bright and prooflike, a feature we have observed on many off-centered coins. Fully struck (another feature seen on many off-center coins), the surfaces show just a hint of reddish patina on each side.
A premium coin for an advanced error set.

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
