The 1901-S, with a paltry mintage of only 72,664 pieces, is the King of the Barber Quarter series and of all the Barber denominations. Although the 1913-S has a lower mintage, most of the '01-S delivery slipped into circulation before there was a widespread interest in collecting mintmarks that did not generally begin until 1909. Thus, the 1901-S, even in a well-worn grade such as AG, Good, or VG is still a significant find. Mint State 1901-S Quarters are notable rarities. So far as is known, none were saved in roll or bag quantities. At the Gem level, this date is particularly desirable, standing as it does at the top of the Barber Quarter series, offering a combination of low mintage, rarity in all grades, numismatic fame, and in the case of the present piece, a delightful combination of high grade and excellent aesthetic appeal. We would like to also note that of the so-called "big three" Barber Quarters in the John Hugon Collection--the 1896-S, 1901-S, 1913-S--they are each outstanding and deserving of special interest and attention. There is not much point in comparing one to the others as each is ultimately needed to complete a Gem Barber Quarter collection.
A simply extraordinary coin irrespective of date, the surfaces are intensely lustrous with a richly frosted texture. Swirls of dove-gray, silver, lilac-purple and antique-golden patina intermingle over both sides. Sharply struck throughout, the hair details are sharp and separated, the centrils of the stars are fully defined, and only the slightest weakness on the upper right portion of the shield on the eagle is detected on close examination. A microscopic die crack connects the tip of the bust truncation through star 13, past the outer edge of star 12, and terminates at star 11. Also, as an additional identifier, two almost invisible abrasions are seen vertically from Liberty's chin down to star 12. NGC and PCGS combined report only four coins in MS67, with a lone MS68 NGC specimen finer (11/04).

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid. This lot is being auctioned in conjunction with a live floor auction by Heritage Galleries & Auctioneers. All final auction and invoice information will be supplied by Heritage Galleries & Auctioneers, and all other information should be considered preliminary. Lot:4129
