<B>1901-S 25C MS65 PCGS.</B></I> Except for the nearly uncollectible 1894-S dime, the 1901-S quarter is the rarest date within the Barber series. The 1892-O Micro O half dollar is also rare, of course, but is a mintmark variety rather than a distinct issue. The mintage of 72,664 for the 1901-S quarter is uncommonly low, especially given the high mintages of gold coins and silver dollars at San Francisco in 1901. Perhaps the prior year's relatively large mintage of more than 1.8 million pieces had not yet been completely distributed. Among Barber quarters, only the 1913-S has a lower production, but this issue is encountered much more frequently in circulated grades than the 1901-S. Some numismatists have speculated that the San Francisco earthquake and fire of 1906 decimated the number of 1901-S survivors, but another possibility is the advent of coin holders. These arrived in time for collectors to set aside circulated examples of the 1913-S, but the 1901-S quarters had by then largely vanished from circulation. Most grade AG3 to VG, with pieces in Fine to AU as difficult to locate as Mint State examples.<BR> This beautiful Gem features dappled light golden-brown and dove-gray toning. Cartwheel luster sweeps the remarkably smooth surfaces. The shield corners are sharply struck, and any softness of detail is limited to the base of the fletchings. No marks exist to provide a pedigree identifier, although a pinpoint russet fleck is noted above the inner point of star 11. As of (9/06), PCGS reports a population of eight pieces at the MS65 level, and just five finer. Some of these may represent resubmissions, and in any event are far less than the number of advanced numismatists assembling noteworthy Barber collections. Speculators have likely targeted the 1901-S as well, since prices have risen sharply in recent years.
