1901-S<25C> MS65 NGC. The 1901-S is the undisputed key to the Barber quarter series. This is not necessarily because so few were minted (the 1913-S actually has a smaller mintage), but because so few were actually set aside at the time of issue. This is true in all grades, and the 1901-S is also a significant find for many collectors in AG through VG grades. In fact, this is the grade range most 1901-S quarters are found in and this is also the price range most Barber collectors can stretch to and acquire an example of. However, as with other early dates and mintmarks in the Barber quarter series, a certain number of Uncirculated coins were set aside for various reasons. As a result, a small number of high grade examples exist of the 1901-S--but very few compared to the collector base of this popular series. Combining the population numbers from both NGC and PCGS, 11 Gems have been certified with nine pieces finer (11/05). Still, a paltry number when compared to the number of Barber quarter collectors who are assembling high grade sets.
One might wonder about hoards or new coins to have come onto the market of this issue. It is our understanding that the 1901-S is an issue that was not set aside in roll quantities, as other issues were just a few years later. In 1901, collectors as well as the general public were unaware of the significance of mintmarks. Such information traveled slowly a hundred years ago, and often by the time collectors and the general public heard news of a low mintage (unlike a new design type) it was too late. The only new coin that we are aware of to enter the numismatic arena in recent years was a spectacular MS65 coin that was found along with a 1901-S dime, half dollar, and dollar in the cornerstone of a schoolhouse in Reno, Nevada. Those coins were sold in our 1994 ANA Sale.
This piece has the usual thick, frosted mint luster that is found on other high grade examples of this key issue. It is struck from a slightly less advanced die state than the Gem we sold in last year's ANA auction, as the die crack from the tip of the bust travels through star 13 and on to the outer point of star 12, but does not extend to star 11 as the ANA coin did. Each side is covered in variegated russet and gray toning with much of the original brilliance still apparent in the areas unaffected by the toning. Sharply impressed in almost all areas, but a bit weak on the upper right portion of the shield, once again like the 2005 ANA coin. A rare opportunity to acquire this key Barber quarter in solid Gem condition.
