1901-S 25C --Cleaned--ANACS. VF30 Details. The vast maj
1901-S<25C>--Cleaned--ANACS. VF30 Details. The vast majority of 1901-S quarters are in AG-VG grades, and coins in Fine and better are rarely encountered. This is for three reasons. First, the low original mintage. Second, apparently the 72,664 coins that were struck were almost all dropped into circulation and stayed there. Third, the few mid-grade coins that are known are tightly held in collections of Barber quarters. The rarity of this issue has encouraged the ungodly (as Breen phrased it) to take advantage of the unwary. Only two sets of dies were used for the 1901-S. This coin is from the second set with Obverse B and Reverse B. This die pairing is characterized by both 1s in the date centered between denticles, and on the reverse by the position of the mintmark above the tops of the R and D.
This is a well-defined piece that shows noticeable wear only on the front of Liberty's hair and on the tips of the eagle's wings. Obviously cleaned, as indicated on the ANACS insert, the surfaces are free from any mentionable blemishes. A light ring of golden toning encircles the margins on each side.
