1901-S 25C--Cleaned--ANACS. Unc Details, Net AU55. Although the 1913-S has a lower original mintage, the 1901-S (72,664 pieces produced) is the undisputed "King of the Barber Quarters." Far fewer people were interested in saving branch mint coinage in 1901 than in 1913, and the survivability of the '01-S was poor at best. Counterfeits abound in today's hobby, but one can avoid such pieces by studying the diagnostics of the two known die varieties in the 1994 book The Complete Guide to Barber Quarters, by David Lawrence. With the first and final digit in the date centered between denticles and the S mintmark almost centered between the R in QUARTER and the D in DOLLAR, the present example was struck from Lawrence's Obverse B and Reverse B die marriage. This is a really not a bad looking coin, and Barber Quarter date collectors would be wise to pay careful attention to the bidding activity on this lot. The cleaning is outwardly perceptible only over the right obverse, and the balance of the surfaces display modest, yet pleasing brightness in the fields. Mottled tan tinged iridescence drifts over powerfully impressed, lightly abraded features. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment.
