1901-S<10C> MS67 PCGS. In 1984, Q. David Bowers said about this coin: "Choice Uncirculated, MS65. Very close to Gem Uncirculated, MS67. Low original mint frost just beginning to tone to light gold. Sharply struck and well defined in all areas. A dazzling, beautiful, truly remarkable specimen of one of the rarest of all branch mint Barber dime issues. A prize for the connoisseur."
This description remains appropriate. Traces of additional pale blue toning enhance the surfaces on both sides. A fine die crack across the bust truncation of this example is similar to that seen on many different issues. Another die crack crosses Liberty's cap, from the D of UNITED to the E of STATES. Quite similar to the Hugon coin in this regard. Upon our initial inspection, it appeared that the mintmark is doubled, with an odd shaped lump over the upper left curve. Careful study reveals a well-placed clash mark, from the leaves at the top of the obverse. Population: 4 in 67, 0 finer (11/05).
Ex: Emery and Nichols Collections (Bowers and Merena, 11/1984), lot 399.
From the Collection of Dr. Steven L. Duckor.
