1901-S $10 MS67 NGC. Breen-7075. The base of the first 1 is boldly repunched. Lighter recutting is visible on the base of the 9 and the top of the 0. The date was initially entered with an upward slant, then corrected. The reverse is also interesting for its strike doubling on UNITED STATES and the left (facing) wing. This doubling is mentioned in Breen's Encyclopedia under Breen-7074, but was caused by a loose reverse die rather than a doubled die, as Breen believed. Presumably, Breen relied upon second-hand information instead of verifying the variety with his own eyes.
This is a splendid gold type coin, well struck and highly lustrous. The obverse is remarkably smooth for a Liberty ten business strike, which are plentiful but generally found abraded. A graze above the TE in TEN is mentioned for pedigree purposes. As of (5/07), Neither NGC nor PCGS has certified any examples finer.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
