1901<S$1> MS64 PCGS. It was this year that the Philadelphia Mint left their old facility, that they had occupied since 1833, and began production at the new Third Mint building. This new and greatly expanded facility served the mint well for several decades, until the fourth and present Mint building was occupied in Philadelphia. In the basement of the new building were several vaults, including one designed exclusively for the storage of silver dollars. This vault was 96 feet by 52 feet and had the capacity to store 100,000,000 of the coins. That is roughly 20,000 per square foot, which would probably be about a 10 foot high stack of silver dollar bags.
Although the mintage of this issue was substantial, few have survived today in Mint State grades. This example is not fully struck, as the hair strands over the ear are slightly merged and the eagle's breast is similarly weak. Most examples of this issue are similarly weak, thus this is not unusual. If anything, this example is a little sharper than most of those that we have offered. The surfaces are lovely, with satiny silver luster, and retain full mint brilliance without toning. A few miniscule abrasions and hairlines keep this from being labeled as a Gem quality coin.
