<B>1901 S$1 Doubled Die Reverse MS61 PCGS.</B></I> In addition to its rarity as a variety, the '01 Morgan dollar is also a date rarity, seldom found in any Mint State grade. Sometimes called the "Shifted Eagle" variety, the VAM-3 is the most obvious of several 1901 doubled reverse coins. This is the only true doubled die example, as the other varieties are actually doubled hub pieces, with the die produced by an impression of the old (pre-1900) hub overlapped by an impression of the new hub.<BR> Doubling is most prominent on the arrows and tail feathers, appearing quite similar to the 1878 doubled tail feather varieties. Additional doubling can be seen along the lower edge of the eagle's beak, and elsewhere, including the branch, arrows, and IN GOD WE TRUST.<BR> Although not fully struck, this piece has good detail with brilliant satin luster on each side. A few faint splashes of rose color appear on the otherwise untoned surfaces.
