<B>1901 S$1 Doubled Die Reverse AU58 PCGS.</B></I> VAM-3. A Top 100 Variety. If the proof-only 1895 is excluded, the 1901 is the rarest Philadelphia Mint Morgan dollar in Mint State, despite a seemingly plentiful mintage of nearly seven million pieces. Presumably, the issue was fully distributed rather than held in Treasury vaults, similar the 1884-S. Among the many 1901 VAMs, the Doubled Die Reverse is the most important, and it is a fabulous rarity in Mint State. PCGS has certified an MS61, NGC has certified an MS62, and there are no others to satisfy the many VAM collectors. Even a near-Mint piece, such as the present coin, is very rare. This lustrous example has peripheral russet toning. The dove-gray fields and devices show only minor contact from momentary circulation.
