1901 Morgan Dollar PCGS MS64
As we've commented on the fact before, but it can do no harm repeating, the 1901-P is one of the major rarities among Morgan Dollars at the choice Mint State level and is easily the most difficult business strike issue from the Philadelphia Mint to procure. That said, the condition rarity of this date is not purely a circulated very scarce. Mint State issue as on many other dates in the series. Quite the contrary. The elusive nature of survivors increases markedly as one moves up the Uncirculated grading scale from MS60 through MS65 (the latter being the highest certified examples). This rarity is unusual, as we said, given the high mintage of almost 7 million pieces. The notion that mintage isn't everything is clearly demonstrated. For comparison, with 330,000 silver dollars struck in Philadelphia two years earlier, one would think that the 1899 date is moderately scarce at best. But 1899 is known by the roll, maybe even by the bag! This 1901, on the other hand was important fifty or seventy-five years ago as it represents the first year of production at the newly constructed third Philadelphia Mint building. The tendency for Mint State survivors of the 1901 to be poorly struck, heavily abraded, and/or lackluster is particularly high on this issue. Offered here is an exceedingly Choice example that is smooth with luster and possesses above-average sharpness for an '01-P. The satiny surfaces are fresh and original, and only a few shallow blemishes rule out an even higher rating. (#7272)
