1901 5C MS67 PCGS. In the 1995 book The Complete Guide to Shield and Liberty Nickels, Gloria Peters and Cynthia Mohon state of the business strike 1901 Nickel: "This will be an elusive coin to find in ultimate condition. Strike is only so-so and to find a fully struck piece with all the other attributes of 65+ will take a long time, unless you get extremely lucky." There is no better way for us to lead off a description that highlights this rare and desirable Superb Gem than by quoting this analysis. There is not a single ill-defined feature on either side, and even the problematic left ear of corn in the reverse wreath is sharp. Both sides are pristine with swirling cartwheel luster effects and dappled sprays of orange-gold iridescence. The single finest example known to PCGS (10/02), this coin would make a wonderful start or addition to a Registry Set of Liberty Nickels. From the St. Louis Collection.
