1901<50C> PR68 Cameo NGC. A mere 813 proof Barber halves were produced in 1901, resulting in a highly popular, collectible date; partly due to the recent turn-of-the-century. A number of these have been mishandled or harshly cleaned over the years; however, a quick review of third-party population figures shows that quite a few pieces have somehow survived, in grades up to and including the Superb, Proof 67 ranking. Above that, this date is a true conditional rarity, with only 12 specimens certified at the PR68 level, including Cameos, by both services combined. (We feel certain that some of these are resubmissions.) One specimen has achieved the lofty PR69 Cameo designation, at NGC.
Both sides of this coin exhibit a brilliant-white finish without any toning whatever. The fields are deeply mirrored with nicely frosted devices that yield a wonderful cameo effect over each side. After studying this coin with a loupe, we fail to find any noteworthy marks or spots that can be used as future identifiers, except for an unusual, hair-thin roller mark (as made) that extends from the top of obverse star 6 to the corner of Liberty's eye.
Possessing enormous eye appeal and unquestionable technical merit, this wonderful Superb Gem would make a marvelous addition to any high-end collection of proof Barber half dollars. NGC Census: 3 in 68 Cameo, 1 finer (9/06).
