<B>1901 $20 PR60 NGC.</B></I> The 1901 has a proof mintage of 96 pieces, a reduction from the 124 proofs struck for the 1900. In his 1988 Encyclopedia, Breen stated, "Possibly 36-40 proofs survive, many impaired." Proofs, such as the present specimen, can be identified by the presence of four faint diagonal, parallel die lines between the TY in LIBERTY.<BR> This needle-sharp proof twenty features darkly mirrored fields and moderately frosted motifs. By today's standards, the contrast may be sufficient to merit a Cameo designation, but no such notation is present, since the piece is certified in an older generation holder. As expected of the PR60 grade, the fields are moderately abraded, but there are no distracting marks.
