1901 $2 1/2 MS68 PCGS. Even after the production of Gold Dollars and Three Dollar Gold pieces ceased in 1889, the mintages of Quarter Eagles remained low. The higher denominations, Half Eagles through Double Eagles, were favored for bullion reserves and international trade. After bottoming out with a production of 2,440 pieces in 1892, however, Quarter Eagle mintages steadily rose thereafter until World War I interrupted overseas shipments. For the 1901 issue, 91,100 pieces were struck. Mint State survivors are not rare, although they are encountered considerably less often than the high mintage final year of the type, 1907. The Quarter Eagle denomination is not as prone to bagmarks as the larger diameter gold coins, however, even the slightest marks will typically disqualify Uncirculated examples from the lofty Superb Gem level. This lovely representative possesses blushes of honey-gold color, and the strike and luster are exemplary. The fields are unmarked, and only the faintest grazes on the chin deny perfection.
