1901 $10 PR64 Deep Cameo PCGS. Faint repunching is seen on the bases of the 1 and 9 in the date--a diagnostic feature of this early 20th century proof delivery. Mint records indicate that 85 coins were produced, but nowhere near that many are extant. Estimates of the number of surviving proof 1901 Eagles ranges from a high of 30-40 coins (per Breen, 1988) to a low of 25-30 pieces (per Akers, 1980). Regardless of which, if either of these estimates is correct, there can be little doubt that the proof 1901 is a rare coin, particularly with a Deep Cameo finish. Both sides possess awe-inspiring contrast between the richly frosted devices and deeply reflective fields. The color is a warm yellow-gold shade at all but the most indirect angles, where coal-black fields predominate in the absence of sufficient light. A tiny planchet flaw (as produced) in the reverse field behind the eagle's head is mentioned for pedigree purposes, otherwise, both sides are expectantly smooth for the near-Gem level. This is the only Deep Cameo example known to NGC and PCGS (7/02).Ex: February 2002 Long Beach Signature Sale (Heritage, 2/02), lot 6925.
