1901 $1 MS63 PCGS. While this turn-of-the-century Philadelphia issue is readily available in circulated grades, Mint State pieces of any level prove elusive, and Select and better examples are doubly so. Most numismatic scholars speculate that the majority of 1901 Morgan dollars never left the Mint, and those that did generally were not saved, which presents a challenge to the modern collector.
This representative is strongly lustrous with hints of hazy golden toning at the margins. A touch of softness is present at the hair above the ear, but the devices are well-defined otherwise. Though both sides show light, scattered marks and an abrasion below the chin that account for the grade, the coin offers excellent visual appeal for the grade assigned. PCGS has graded just 23 pieces finer (10/07).

Coin Engraver: George T.
