1901 $1 MS63 NGC. The '01-P is one of the truly great and instantly recognizable condition rarities in the Morgan silver dollar series of 1878-1921. What's more, the condition rarity of this date is not purely a circulated vs. Mint State issue. On the contrary, the elusiveness of survivors increases exponentially as one progresses up the Uncirculated grading scale from MS60 through MS65 (the latter being the highest grade among certified examples). For starters, however, we will address the rarity and desirability of the 1901 in all Mint State grades. Mint records indicate that a sizeable total of 6.9 million dollars were delivered by the Philadelphia Mint in 1901. We have little reason to doubt the validity of this figure, but it in no way explains why the vast majority of extant examples are circulated to one degree or another. It is likely that most '01-P dollars were either placed into the avenues of commerce or melted under the terms of the 1918 Pittman Act. Those that averted both fates are likely to be poorly struck, heavily abraded, and/or lackluster--these features explaining the condition rarity of this issue within the Mint State grading scale.
This is a very appealing Choice 1901 Morgan dollar. The strike is above average with the obverse focal features displaying appreciably bold definition, while the reverse is notably soft in the center. Blushes of gold and tan iridescence drift over lightly abraded, pleasingly lustrous surfaces.

Coin Engraver: George T.
