This amethyst crackle glass candy or nut bowl is not only beautiful, it represents a significant part of the history of handblown art glass in America. It came from a home full of wares from the 19th to early 20th century. Most likely made by the one of the first group of American companies to crackle glass such as Hobbs, the New England Glass Company, Fry, or Durand, it is beautifully amethyst with ruffled sides. Although it has a bowl shape, this shape is imperfect and does not match any of the shades of amethyst manufactured by the later American crackle glass makers, the West Virginia glass companies.<p>

Crackle glass, as lovely as it is for collectors, was made originally to "save" a piece of glass in progress that showed cording or heavy lines and swirls that would detract from the perfection of the final product. Rather than throw away what was otherwise a wonderful piece of art glass, the artists simply devised methods for "crackling" the glass, or creating patterns of deliberate cracks that not only disguised the imperfection but added beauty. The results are the mesmerizing, brightly colored pieces we enjoy today. The amethyst color is made from manganese.<p>

Glass artists devised at least five methods for making crackle glass, which were derivations of the basic process of exposing hot glass somehow to cooler temperatures and then reheating the crackled glass to seal it and smooth the finish.
