1900$1 Lafayette Dollar MS67 PCGS. DuVall 3-D. Fire-red, olive-gray, and gold colors bathe this lustrous and sharply struck Superb Gem. A spectacularly preserved representative of this important early Commemorative type, one of just three struck in the 19th century. The precedence of using Half Dollars only for silver Commemoratives was not set prior to the 1915-S Panama-Pacific Exposition, even the Columbian Expo Half Dollars were accompanied by Isabella Quarters.
The legends for the Lafayette Dollar were not hubbed, but instead were punched by hand onto the working dies, similar to mint practice of the 1830s and earlier. The goal of striking the entire issue on the centennial of Washington's death (December 14, 1899) probably contributed to the usage of partially hubbed dies. On DuVall 3-D, the base of the AT in STATES is repunched on the obverse, while the olive branch has a slender and level stem. All varieties combined of the Lafayette Dollar have a mintage of 50,000 pieces, however, the Mint melted 14,000 unsold pieces in 1945, indifferent to their collector value. The Lafayette type remains the only Silver Dollar in the "classic" Silver Commemorative series, and one of two types (along with the Sesquicentennial Half Dollar) that depict the first president. Population: 5 in 67, none finer (1/05).
From the Bruce Scher #1 All-Time PCGS Registry Set. Lot:4140
