1900 U.S. $10,000 GOLD CERTIFICATE
1900 U.S. $10,000 GOLD CERTIFICATE. Serial No. M161926. Stamped to the order of the Federal Reserve Board in Washington, D.C. on June 27, 1917. The certificate is stamped twice "Worthless" and shows punched text at the right side. The certificate comes with a letter dated January 6, 1948 from the U.S. Treasury Department to Reed Martin, Chief Clerk at the General Accounting Office. The letter reads "Enclosed find one cancelled $10,000 Gold Certificate, Serial No. M161926, with the information that it was found on the Greenbelt junk pile at Beltsville, Maryland, by Mrs. Ruth Catron, December 31, 1947." The letter is boldly signed by James Maloney, chief of the U.S. Secret Service. The lot also consists of the original envelope that carried the letter, postmarked January 8, 1948.
