1900 S$1 Lafayette Dollar MS67 NGC. As part of its participation in the 1900 Paris Exposition, the United States pledged $50,000 to erect Paul Wayland Bartlett's statue of General The Marquis de Lafayette at the Exposition. In order to help the federal government defray the cost of this statue, Congress authorized a Commemorative Silver Dollar for sale to the public with the Act of March 3, 1899. A total of 50,000 Lafayette Dollars (plus an additional 26 examples for assay purposes) were produced on December 14 of that year, each of which was dated 1900. All but 14,000 of these coins were sold, many of them to the non-collecting public, which explains the rarity of this issue in the finer Mint State grades. The unsold coins were later melted. Despite the fact that this is the second sale this year in which we are offering an MS67 representative of the Lafayette Dollar, one should not assume that this is a common issue as a Superb Gem. It most certainly is not, as both major grading services combined report just 11 coins in MS67 and none finer (7/02). This is a beautiful and completely original example with swirls of silver-gray near-brilliance in the right fields around which have gathered multiple layers of champagne-lilac and olive-gold colors. The luster is full, vibrant, and frosty with swirling cartwheel effects that are uninhibited by the numerous distracting abrasions that often plague survivors of this early U.S. Commem. The MS67 PCGS Lafayette Dollar that we recently offered as lot 5002 in our New York 2002 Signature Sale realized $59,800.
