Lafayette dollars were authorized by Congress on March 3, 1899, and struck the following December, despite the date of 1900 on the reverse marking the actual celebration of the Paris Exposition. The Act was intended "For the purpose of aiding in defraying the cost of a pedestal, and completing in a suitable manner the work of erecting a monument in the city of Paris to General Lafayette, designed by the Lafayette Memorial Commission, as a feature of the participation of the United States in the Paris Exposition of nineteen hundred.<BR> The DuVall 3-D variety has the second T in STATES repunched at the bottom. The T in UNITED, A in STATES, and E in AMERICA also show evidence of repunching. This is an absolutely stunning and splendid Premium Gem example of the issue with deep magenta and pale blue color, accented by light yellow at the borders. Examples of this quality are seldom encountered, and you can practically forget about a finer coin. PCGS has only certified five coins at higher grades, and those are almost certainly all off the market. Population: 83 in 66, 5 finer (6/05).
