1900$1> Lafayette Dollar MS66 NGC. DuVall 2-C. Lafayette dollars are one of the keys to a commemorative silver set, and also the first commemorative silver dollar until modern times. They are the first commemoratives larger than a half dollar, except for 1848 CAL quarter eagles, which resemble regular issue coinage but are, in fact, true commemoratives. And they are the first U.S. coins depicting a U.S. president, in this case George Washington. Although the issue commemorates the erection of a monument to the Marquis de Lafayette in Paris, as part of the United States' participation in the Paris Exposition of 1900, the coins were in fact struck on Dec. 14, 1899, the 100th anniversary--to the day--of the death of George Washington.
While most examples show marks or scratches on the exposed cheek of Washington, this brilliant silver-white piece lacks all but minuscule marks in that area, unworthy of singular mention. Much cartwheel luster is evident, and the full strike makes evident details that are normally blurry or absent, such as the boot line at the top of Lafayette's boot, the saddle-blanket details, and the coat wrinkles above. A phenomenally nice and nearly unsurpassable example, as only about a dozen pieces at both NGC and PCGS have graded finer (9/06).
