1900-O<S$1> MS67 PCGS. The 1900 New Orleans issue, with a mintage of nearly 13 million pieces, was considered for decades to be common, even before thousands more emerged from Treasury Department vaults during the massive silver dollar release of 1962-64. But most survivors, even if technically Uncirculated, are heavily abraded, scuffed, and "beaten up," meriting no higher than an MS62 grade, if that. The present example presents none of those surface challenges. No obvious abrasions appear to the naked eye, although scrutiny with a loupe reveals a single, unbothersome nick on the eagle's breast. Liberty's cheek is extremely clean, and a light ring of golden-russet color that encircles each side attests to this coin's originality. None graded finer at either NGC or PCGS (12/05).
