1900 Lafayette $1 PCGS MS66 [L#2239
Fantastic toning, surfaces and overall perfection are seen in this early silver dollar commemorative. The coin fully warrants its lofty grade boasting pristine luster on both sides. Unaffected by heavy handling marks or value-reducing hairlines, the coin stands front and center in the ranks of surviving Lafayettes! We cannot imagine a more attractively toned specimen, where the surfaces combine lovely russet browns with amber reds and other iridescent, almost pastel, hues.

Charles E. Barber engraved the dies for the Lafayette dollar (and many other issues). As an interesting note, numismatic historian Arlie Slabaugh has observed that Barber's work on the Lafayette is almost certainly a plagiarism of the obverse of the Yorktown Centennial medal of 1881, engraved by Peter L. Krider.
