"The Story of Little Black Sambo" by Helen Bannerman, turn of the Century ( 1900 ) early printing, hardcover binding, Grant Richards publishing, London, 113 pages, 3" X 5" size. Helen Bannerman's classic & sometimes controversial children's story, bound by green cloth-covered boards with the title emblazoned in black ink on the front cover, spine amidst a minimalist pattern. The text features numerous illustrations & the verso of each leaf is blank. By today's standards this is something of a problematic & racially charged tale, though "critics of the time observed that Bannerman presents one of the first black heroes in children's literature & regarded the book as positively portraying black characters in both text & pictures, especially in comparison to the more negative books of that era that depicted blacks as simple and uncivilized." * the text shows some typical indications of age and wear including some light toning, rubbing & soiling on its boards. There is a partial crack in the front hinge though the pages remain solid & intact. It appears that the back hinge has been neatly repaired at some point. There is a handwritten note in pencil on the verso of one page. Some light toning is visible on the pages, the text & illustrations remain clear, bright & legible. - 10393-050518-IN-02126
