Edmund Goldsmid Williams and his brother George, who had immigrated to America from England in the 1840s, founded the business. The Williams brothers established their company in 1851 on Nassau Street in Lower Manhattan as a small printing shop. The Williams brothers quickly made a name for themselves as knowledgeable and creative printers in the city's printing industry, which at the time was centered on Nassau Street. E. G. Williams & Bro. had a reputation for producing high-quality work by the 1860s and had grown to be one of the biggest and most prosperous printing companies in the city. E. G. Williams & Bro. also printed a wide variety of other printed materials, such as books, maps, and advertisement posters, in addition to financial printing. Up until the early 20th century, E. G. Williams & Bro. was still operating before being eventually absorbed by other printing companies.
