Following the Lafayette dollar, the main promoter of the nation's commemorative programs was noted numismatist Farran Zerbe. While Zerbe was instrumental in putting together a number of commemorative issues (and influencing legislators to pass his bills), for the most part, his interest lay in gold commemoratives, not silver, and the Lafayette dollar would be the last silver commemorative for 15 years, until the Panama-Pacific half arrived.<BR> Though famous today, the Lafayette dollar did not sell out in its time, and in addition to 36,026 pieces sold or placed into circulation, 14 bags of 1,000 coins each lay in a Treasury vault until 1945, when they were melted.
