Qien Lung period white jade carving imitating earlier period of Sung jade carvings that by themselves imitated jade carvings of Han period. This is a superlative jade carving in flawless mutton fat jade in shape of a pendant. This type of pendant was used as a girdle ornament during Han period and rejuvenated during Sung period, the great imitator of golden ancient age period. The obverse is in shape of a hydra resting on a heart shape lotus leaf. The reverse illustrates the lotus leaf decorated in bas relief with ancient scroll and tendrils pattern typical for Han period. Qien Lung emperor as himself a great calligraphy artist, addicted lover of arts, brought China to a peak of arts renaissance. This is a great example of Qien Lung peak of lapidary art at its best!.
