18th century carved American powderhorn showing name Jacobus Von Schoonhoven year 1756, written as “Iacovus Von Schoonhouen an 1756”. The horn shows a man in triquarter hat holding a musket followed by a dog with birds, florals, and early American leaf and carving. The horn has seen wear, incorrect light cleaning with something like sand paper, which is a shame and has cleaned some of the patina off of the horn as it was probably dark, and there has been something astringent also applied which this cataloger cautions collectors, dealers, and antiquarians not to clean horns, as the patina is valuable and cleaning horns negatively affects their value. There are some very small intricately carved areas that are not quite legible near the neck of the horn which are not quite legible and may have been a small Apex of rivers with names. There is also a “JH” and “PL” which is later, and what appears to be two banners with initials. The horn measures almost 12” across the curve, approx. ¾” across the plug which has been aggressively cleaned. The neck is nicely carved. There is just a trace of patina left on the horn that the restorer didn’t get to because it was deep in the body. Jacobus Von
