18th. century white-celadon jade carving in shape of an axe with a Bi Xi mythological animal riding on top of the axe. A hydra is carved on the side of the axe. The obverse is convex and the reverse is flat. Interestingly, the beast has a biforked tail that each part is featured on each side. This carving dates to reign of emperor Qien Lung and is a marvelous work of lapidary art. The carving features a homogenous color jade without any blemishes. Length: 4" (10 cm.). Width: 2" (5 cm.). Estimated value: $7000.
