Bamboo carving was considered the most elegant and sophisticated technique. Not only was it highly labor intensive, but it was also different task to carve given the natural breakdown of the bamboo itself. This elegant CUP is finely and deeply carved in high relief and undercut around the sides with a gathering of scholars, some seen arriving by boat while others are already gathered in pavilions nestled amidst pine trees. Near the top, some natural leaves and Lotus are laying against each other proceeding up a mountain path to a gathering on a wide terrace near a rocky outcrop. It is considered the most elegant piece of SIMPLE ?CUP? in China?s history. Of large, subtly waisted cylindrical form tapering slightly towards the base, the bamboo is of a characteristic natural hue. With its elegant construction, simple, refined and aesthetic, these types of simple pone piece objects have its own origins in furniture of the Ming Dynasty.
