This is a wonderful 18th century Southern vernacular country made cherry side chair also known as a straight chair. Circa 1775-1795. Made in Virginia or Maryland. Chairs with similar feature as this one are documented as being Virginia or Maryland. Found in Baltimore, MD. What is fascinating and rare about this chair is it was originally upholstered. It still has it original upholstery blocks connecting the seat rail and the back stiles. It originally had a upholstered over the rail upholstery. The bottom part of the chair is influence by Chippendale. The front chair legs have a nice bead design on the ends. The back stiles of the chair have a nice flare to them with chamfered ends on the back of the stiles starting from the seat rail going up. Connecting the stales are three shaped and bowed slats. The chair is all pegged construction & the cherry wood has rich grain. This is a very good example of early Southern Vernacular furniture. A country furniture maker copying styles from the bigger city's. Measurements: Height of back of chair 36". Height of front seat 16". With of chair 18" 1/2. Depth of chair 15".
